A Water Stopper (Waterstop) is a waterproofing material used to prevent water leakage through construction joints in concrete structures. When concrete is poured in stages, joints are formed between the old concrete and the new concrete, which can become a weak point where water may seep through.
A water stopper is installed at these joints to block water penetration and create a watertight seal. Water stoppers are commonly made from PVC, rubber, or hydrophilic materials (swellable strips) that expand when exposed to water and seal the joint
The construction joint between two concrete pours is identified.
The water stopper strip is placed at the center of the joint.
It is temporarily fixed using adhesive, nails, or clamps to keep it in position.
The second concrete pour is done, embedding the water stopper inside the joint.
If a hydrophilic waterstop is used, it expands when it comes into contact with water, sealing the joint completely.
✔ Prevents water leakage through construction joints
✔ Provides long-term protection for basements and foundations
✔ Improves the durability and lifespan of concrete structures
✔ Reduces future maintenance and repair costs
✔ Effective in areas exposed to high water pressure
Where is Water Stopper Used?
Water stoppers are typically used in structures where water pressure or moisture exposure is high, such as:
Basements and foundation walls
Raft foundations
Water tanks and underground tanks
Swimming pools
Lift pits
Retaining walls
Expansion and construction joints
Sewage treatment plants
Dams and reservoirs
In simple terms, water stoppers are used wherever concrete joints are exposed to water or moisture risk.
