Torch membrane is a polymer-modified bituminous waterproofing membrane that is applied using a flame torch. The underside of the membrane is coated with a heat-activated film that melts during installation, creating a strong and uniform bond with the concrete surface.
It is typically reinforced with polyester fabric to enhance tensile strength, flexibility, and durability.
Key Features:
Excellent waterproofing performance
Strong adhesion to concrete substrates
High tensile strength and flexibility
Resistant to temperature variations
Long service life
Common Applications:
Roof slabs
Basements
Foundations
Water tanks
Wet areas
Torch membranes can be used in both exposed systems (with mineral finish) and protected systems (with screed or protective layers), depending on project requirements.
The membrane offers versatile applications due to its excellent durability, flexibility at low temperatures, and stability under high-temperature conditions. These performance characteristics make it highly suitable for a wide range of waterproofing requirements.
It is recommended for use in roofs, basement tanking systems, retaining walls, bridges, and multi-storey car parks where reliable and long-lasting waterproof protection is essential.
Membranes with an aluminum-finished surface are specifically designed for exposed applications and can be left directly exposed to weather conditions without additional protective layers.
1. Fully Bonded System
Installation should commence from the lowest point, typically at the drainage outlets. Unroll the membrane to its full length, properly stretch and align it in a straight line. Once aligned, roll it back carefully without disturbing its position.
Torching must be carried out by a skilled technician. Heat the underside of the membrane until the PE film melts and the bituminous compound reaches the proper bonding temperature. Gradually advance the roll forward to achieve full adhesion to the primed substrate.
Subsequent rolls should be installed in the same manner, maintaining a minimum overlap of 3 inches (75 mm) on side laps and 4 inches (100 mm) on end laps. All overlaps must be thoroughly torch-sealed and finished smoothly using a heated trowel.
2. Partially Bonded (Spot Bonded) System
The partially bonded system is applied to concrete surfaces to reduce wind uplift pressure and control the formation of air bubbles beneath the membrane.
The layout and alignment procedure remains the same as the fully bonded system. However, torching is applied in intermittent spots or strips rather than continuously. Overlaps must be maintained at 3 inches (75 mm) on side laps and 4 inches (100 mm) on end laps.
All overlaps must be completely torch-sealed and properly finished using a hot trowel.
3. Loose Laid System
The loose-laid application is typically recommended over lean concrete surfaces. The membrane is positioned and aligned in the same manner as described above.
In this system, torching is applied only at the overlaps, maintaining 3 inches (75 mm) side laps and 4 inches (100 mm) end laps. All lap joints must be fully torch-sealed and neatly finished with a heated trowel.
4. Primer Application (Primer Grip)
Primer must be applied prior to all membrane installations. All surfaces should be smooth, clean, dry, and free from dust, oil, or loose particles before applying the primer to ensure proper adhesion.
